Sharp Shinned Hawk
Accipiter striatus

photo of sharp shinned hawkDescription:  Size 10 to 14 inches.  Gray above and chestnut below with white stripes.

Habitat & Range:  Mixed Woodlands usually conifer.  Canada and Northern United States.

Feeding:  Insects, small birds & rodents.

Nesting:  It lays 3 to 6 eggs with brown spots. Its nest is built of twigs high in an evergreen tree.

Voice:  Ka-Ka-Ka

Other Behaviors:  When in flight it has a square tail with four to five dark bands and rounded wings.

Folklore:  Eggs once collected as the most handsome of all hawk eggs.
